Mike Larsen
I started writing jokes at 8 years old after my grandmother told me a story didn’t have to be true if it was funny. I devoured joke books, studied comedians on TV, and dissected every joke I heard, like a grease monkey pulls apart old cars.
In college, I started writing speeches for politicians around San Francisco, and eventually hit some open mic comedy nights with minimal success. But I stayed with it, eventually moving to Washington, DC after graduating. That’s where my stand up career started. I earned a reputation as a solid joke writer, and national headliners started taking me on the road as an open act and writing buddy. I bugged the hell out of them to tell me their jokewriting secrets, and started assembling a system that worked for me.
I moved to Los Angeles after being “discovered” by Budd Friedman, owner of the world famous Improv. Soon, I made my first appearance on The Tonight Show, and taught myself how to write television sitcoms. That led to a 20+ year run writing and producing some great tv shows, then to a high-level job on Capitol Hill, and writing speeches for high profile politicians and other big shots.
Turns out, joke writing skills are transferable. Thanks, Grandma.
