Mike Larsen
I started writing jokes at 8 years old after my grandmother told me a story didn’t have to be true if it was funny. I devoured joke books, studied comedians on TV, and dissected every joke I heard, like a grease monkey pulls apart old cars.
In college, I started writing speeches for politicians around San Francisco, and eventually hit some open mics with minimal success. I moved to Washington, DC after graduating, and when I couldn’t land a job with my poli sci degree, tried stand up again.
I earned a reputation as a solid joke writer. A top national headliner took me on the road as an opening act and writing buddy. I bugged the hell out of him and every other comic for jokewriting secrets, and started assembling a system that worked for me.
That led to multiple apperances on The Tonight Show, and a 20+ year career as a TV writer.
Turns out, joke writing skills are transferable. Thanks, Grandma.
